The song was written and first recorded by Bruce Springsteen. To my ears, his version is superior in every way, including clarity of lyrics. Thanks for reminding me of that site, I needed a chucke!

I don't really mishear lyrics. I'm that annoying person who only gets every other word and hums the rest. :D I can usually sing along with a song I know if it's playing, but if you ask me to sing it cold without any music, well, good luck to both of us. :)

I'd heard it was Springsteen's tune, but I have honestly only ever heard the Manfred Mann one. :) I have no doubt The Boss would sing it more clearly. He's The Boss for a reason, yo!
